Overview & Release
Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew serves as the launchpad for Netflix’s new cinematic adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s The Chronicles of Narnia. Rather than starting with The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, Gerwig opted to begin at the chronological beginning of the lore.
Theatrical Release: February 12, 2027 (with IMAX sneak previews starting February 10)
Streaming Release: April 2, 2027 (Netflix)
Theatrical Distribution: Netflix (North America), Sony Pictures Entertainment (International)
Storyline
Adapted from C.S. Lewis’s 1955 prequel novel, the film chronicles the birth of Narnia and explains how magic entered our world:
Victorian London: Young Digory Kirke and his neighbor Polly Plummer stumble upon the secret attic laboratory of Digory’s eccentric and manipulative uncle, Andrew Ketterley.
The Magic Rings: Using magic rings forged by Andrew, Digory and Polly are transported into the Wood between the Worlds, a mystical nexus filled with pools that lead to different universes.
The Awakening of Evil: Exploring the dying world of Charn, Digory rings a forbidden bell, inadvertently awakening Queen Jadis (the White Witch).
The Creation of Narnia: While attempting to return Jadis to her realm, the group ends up in an unformed void. There, they witness Aslan sing the world of Narnia into existence—introducing life, light, talking beasts, and the lamppost. Digory must undertake a quest to retrieve an apple of youth to protect the fledgling realm and heal his terminally ill mother.
